Currently Obsessed With

It’s the first month of a new year!  2016 is here to stay so to speak!  Here are a few of my current obsessions.

Of course the life and art of David Bowie are awe inspiring, but I’m a little in love with their love story.  So sweet and so real.

Gallery Wall Make-Over

Blast from the past!

Queen B Vintage Studios

The last few weeks I have been overwhelmed by looking at so many images of home wall galleries, that my head was about to explode.  So many different theories and measuring instructions.  Ideas like all black frames or large white mattes.   Botanicals, animal themes, photographs. Gold frames with floral mattes.   You get the idea.

I even started a whole Pinterest Board to inspire me.  The problem was that no matter how beautiful the ‘designers galleries’ looked they were not something I could duplicate because my art was unique to me, which is the whole point exactly.

I tried and tried to work on a formula, when finally I threw caution to the wind, collected all my stuff and just basically threw it on the wall.  I used my Design 101 Theory from college to try to work out a basically balanced look.  And in doing so, I have…

Bar Cart Redo From Gross to Glam!

Still one of my favorite pieces of furniture! #barcart

Queen B Vintage Studios

Anyone who knows me, knows I am obsessed with bar carts.  It’s well documented here and here.  There is just something so versatile about them.  They can be used as a serving cart in the dining room, or a coffee cart in the kitchen.  And God knows I love a good vintage bar cart, so when I came across this little guy at the estate sale a few weeks ago, I KNEW I had to have it.

Granted it was a mess!  It was dirty and so rusted out I thought I might have taken on too much.  Thank goodness for vinegar and steel wool.  Here’s a tip if you have rusted out stuff: just soak it in vinegar over night and use the steel wool to clean it off.  The rust literally falls off!

Anyway, after the prep work came the fun work.  I decided to go neutral

That Day

Everyone knows where there were and what they were doing that Tuesday morning.  The Monday before is long gone from our collective memories because everything changed the next day.

Every year, I force myself to remember that day.  I feel it’s all I can do at this point. I fret that children born after around 1995 have no recollection of that day and that they aren’t learning about it in school or at home.   I watch videos, read memes, check my feeds for hashtags like #neverforget #911, etc. I am worried every year people will forget and every year I am relieved to find that in fact….no….people have not forgotten.  This small sliver of hope makes me stoically go through the day with some sense of fortitude.

I visited New York before and after 9-11.  I never made it to the towers on my few visits before.  Sadly, I went downtown and was more interested in checking out Century 21, a huge department store with designer clothes marked down like crazy.  It is, what it is.

Since 9-11, I have visited Manhattan numerous times.  Every time, I make myself go downtown to Ground Zero and watch.  I viewed the tremendous hole in the ground.  To actually witness the empty dirt filled  footprints of the Towers was overwhelming.  It was colossal.  Over the years, the site turned into a construction zone.  A few years ago I was able to visit the 9-11 Memorial with the huge and healing sounds of water flowing and victims names embedded into the metal for all to see and touch and weep.

Last summer I went again to the memorial and was so proud to see the Liberty Tower which literally has risen from the ashes.  It’s a testament building.  A testament to not only this great country we are so privileged to call home, but a testament to the power of people working together to build something beautiful from something evil.  The cowards who flew into the Towers, the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania, never got that.  They thought they knew America and Americans.  Excuse my language , but they didn’t know shit.

The American spirit prevailed that day and this day.  We are a free, happy, prosperous nation that is a beacon of freedom to the entire world.  Flaws and all.  So, on this day in honor of the  2,997 souls who are no longer on this earth, I choose to be grateful, to do good, to live a life worthy of their memory.

God bless America.

My Love of Succulents Will Never Die

I love succulents almost as much as my Corgi’s….almost.

The main reason I love them so, is that I cannot kill them.  No matter what I do.  For someone with a brown thumb, this is a big deal.

Here is my latest little piece of succulent love using a thrift store candle holder, paint and succulents bought at the local Farmer’s market for $5.00.

Love my window garden.

Can You Tell Which Ones Are Considered Fine Art?

I have been seeing a sponsored link on my Facebook page from an art auction company called Paddle 8.  I was intrigued and checked out their site.  It was full of contemporary art one could bid for online.  Sort of like a high end artsy ebay.

However upon further investigation I was amazed at how ugly and ridiculous the art was.  Seriously. Yet, all of this rubbish was being praised and described in such lofty attributes, I for a moment thought the Onion had taken of Paddle 8.

Example on one piece of ‘art’, the description reads “Succo’s contemporary take on abstraction is grounded in a desire to see patterns emerge through repeated gestural activity. Working in a limited, nearly monochromatic palette, the trace of the artist’s hand becomes the principal agent of expression. Here, in “UNTITLED [RB#1]” cyclical flourishes dance over an icy, blue-grey surface of lacquer and oil paint.”  WTF does that even mean?  Either way, the starting price is….wait for it……$9,000.00!  LOLOLOL

Here is what their trying to pawn off as art.  (and they will probably succeed.)

This actually looks like my drop cloth.

Anyway, I thought I would try an experiment and submit a piece of my abstract art for consideration to be auctioned off at Paddle 8.

I submitted with a lofty description of how I use found medium to convey a sense of sustainability in the pieces.  I incorporate acrylic, oil, gold leaf and objects for a textured and layered visage.  I thought this description conveyed the proper pretentiousness for  my experiment.

However, since I’m not a ‘listed’ artist, I was rejected with a curt, but polite email.

For a moment I was slightly hurt, but then again, I realized the rejection might possibly be a compliment.

Anyway, I thought I would see if my readers could tell the difference between which one I submitted and which ones are actually up for sale at this very moment for thousands of dollars.

Here goes.  Which of these four paintings are being sold on Paddle 8 for thousands of dollars and which one is hanging in my bathroom.
